There is Magic Everywhere
I’m only nine years old, yet these last few weeks have been particularly challenging for me. You see, I believe strongly in magic, but my friends think that’s silly. I’ve tried everything to make them believers.I took Sarah on an early morning fairy expedition. The only thing she found was a mosquito bite on her ankle. I took Izzy to find a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. All we discovered was a pile of bricks at the end of my street. I showed Josie how to kiss a frog so it would turn into a prince. Okay, it wasn’t a frog. It was my cat. But still!
Yesterday was Valentine’s Day and I desperately wanted to prove the existence of magic by finding Cupid. I pulled out all the stops and resorted to my secret weapon: I wore my lucky TwirlyGirl dress. Amazing things happen to me when I wear that dress, and I knew it wouldn’t let me down. So you can imagine how frustrated I was when I exited school that day, with Cupid nowhere to be found.
Suddenly, out of the corner of my eye (which doesn’t really have a corner because it’s round) I spotted something quite peculiar. It was a unicorn trotting across a busy intersection. I was shocked, not only because unicorns are mythical creatures possessing untold magical powers, but because there was a crossing guard only a half block away. It’s always safer to cross with a crossing guard, which should be obvious unless you were raised in a barn. But then again, maybe this unicorn was raised in a barn.
“It’s magic!” I yelled, as I raced to grab the unicorn by the horn. It wasn’t a car horn. I definitely don’t want to give you that impression. It was the kind of horn that you might see on, like, a unicorn. I grabbed the unicorn by the horn and guided him through the traffic. It was complete chaos as all the cars honked their horns. And just to be completely clear, the cars didn’t have the same kind of horn that the unicorn had. Their horns were the “beep-beep” kind.
When we got to the safety of the sidewalk, I asked the unicorn if he was okay?
“Nay,” he responded.
“Nay as in “no?” or nay as in something a horse says?’
“Nay as in something a horse says,” responded the unicorn with the most charming English accent. He then thanked me profusely for saving his life and asked if he could ever repay me.
This was the opportunity of a lifetime. A chance to prove to my friends that magic existed! “Would it be okay if we took a selfie?”
“Nay,” responded the Unicorn.
My heart sank with disappointment.
“Nay as in something a horse says,” clarified the Unicorn.
I quickly took out my phone and posed with my arm around his rainbow colored mane. It smelled like peppermint sticks and sunshine. After exchanging goodbyes, the unicorn trotted off into the clouds, sparks of lighting shooting from his hooves. I had finally done it. I had proven that magic is real.
Unfortunately, this is where my story takes an unsatisfying turn. When I showed the photo to my friends, I was mortified to discover that my thumb had partially obstructed the lens, completely blocking out the unicorn. All you could see is me wearing my lucky TwirlyGirl dress. My friends laughed heartily, and now refer to this outfit as my “Unicorn Dress.” But I know what I saw, and I know why I saw it. It’s all due to my lucky TwirlyGirl Unicorn Dress. There’s magic everywhere, but sometimes you need a little help finding it.
